Go Ahead Fail

John Maxwell wrote a great book called Failing Forward.
I am so grateful for his book because it removes the feeling that I am “my “ failure. It’s an event not an indictment. I have tried so many things that seemingly failed and yet gave me new insight and perspective.
Once I decided to do a 5k walk in Sag Harbor with the YMCA. Someone talked me into it and I knew it wasn’t the smartest thing to do because I was not in shape but in process. I had no idea what 5k actually meant. I drove to Sag Harbor very excited, got my number , got in the crowd with all these people like I saw on tv.
Some of them actually ran, oh my God. I stayed with the walkers but soon learned I walk a lot slower than I thought.
As people passed me up hill and down hill, I was praying not to die.
When I passed the water people smiling because they weren’t walking, I was afraid to drink more than a little cup. More than that may have required a diaper on this trip. Soon a very very old man (92) began to gain on me and I truly felt defeated. He received cheers as he went through the finish line but I was at least behind him. I made it. My perspective was “it’s possible to walk 5k if I had too. “ It was an event not an indictment and I participated . Yeah!!
